Hurricane Season is Here – Are You Ready?
June 1st marked the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season, which will run through November 30th. Florida’s hurricane season hits its peak mid-August through early September, but one can strike at any time. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that the 2017 season is primed for above normal activity.
The 2016 season was the most active season since 2012, with 15 named storms, including 7 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). It should be noted that NOAA also predicted that the 2016 season would be above normal.
In support of its prediction, NOAA cites to what they expect to be a weak, or non-existent El Nino. In other words, it expects higher than normal ocean temperatures combined with less winds. These conditions result in stronger storms that are not steered away from Florida.
Even without considering NOAA’s predictions, precautions should always be taken as we begin any hurricane season. This year marks the 25th anniversary from when Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida; a season that fell ‘below average’ as it produced only 6 named storms. 1992 proved that “it only takes one.”
